Officials: NY jobless rate was 7.8 percent in April, lowest since the end of Great Recession

ALBANY, New York — State labor officials say New York's unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 percent in April, the lowest since the end of the Great Recession in 2009.

They say preliminary U.S. Department of Labor statistics show the rate fell from 8.2 percent in March and 8.6 percent a year earlier.

The rate in New York City was 8.4 percent, down from 8.9 in March and 9.4 last year. In the rest of the state, the rate dropped from 7.7 percent to 7.4 percent. It was 7.9 percent the year before.

The state labor department said Thursday that 23,800 private sector jobs were added in April, for a total of 7,452,100.

Job losses since April 2012 have been greatest in government, at 16,200. Manufacturing shed 11,300 jobs and 5,600 financial sector jobs were lost.
