HARTFORD, Connecticut — Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says there will be a team of volunteer attorneys trained in election law ready to respond to potential problems at the polls, including in Bridgeport where there's a hotly contested mayoral race.
Mary Jane Foster has asked Merrill to send monitors to every Bridgeport polling place on Tuesday to watch for irregularities. Foster is one of eight candidates vying for mayor, including former Mayor Joe Ganim.
Merrill said Foster, who petitioned her way onto the ballot, is not entitled to appoint an unofficial checker.
Merrill said she's aware of past voting problems in Bridgeport. She said her office and the State Elections Enforcement Commission will have representatives in Bridgeport and across Connecticut responding to concerns, contending the current system is very effective.
