SUMMERVILLE, South Carolina — If you are driving to or from Charleston on I-26 in coming weeks, expect delays.

The Department of Transportation says the passing lanes on the busy interstate will be closed in both directions at times outside Summerville as median cables are installed.

The department says to expect heavy congestion at times, generally in the morning, and consider alternate routes. One traffic lane will remain open in each direction at all times and there are no Sunday closings.

The project is to improve safety on what has been a deadly stretch of interstate.

DOT original wanted to cut down all trees in the median between I-95 and Summerville. But a compromise with local governments allowed some trees to stay and the median cables to go up.
