Pierre mayor to run unopposed in bid for 3rd term; Gill only one to file petitions by deadline

Share/Save/Bookmark

PIERRE, South Dakota — The mayor of South Dakota's capital city will face no opposition in her bid for a third term.

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill was the only person to file petitions to run for the office by the Tuesday evening deadline. The election is June 3.

It will be the second time Gill will run unopposed — she also had no challenger in 2011. Gill says she sees that as a sign that residents are happy with the way the city is developing.

Gill has been involved in Pierre politics for 15 years. She served three three-year terms on the City Commission before being elected mayor for the first time in 2008.
