Department of Defense says sergeant based at Fort Bragg dies after attack in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina — The Department of Defense says a soldier based at Fort Bragg has died in Afghanistan.

Military officials say 35-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Samuel C. Hairston of Houston, Texas died Tuesday in Ghazni of injuries sustained when his unit encountered enemy small-arms fire.

Hairston was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
