PSV leading in Dutch league at winter break; defending champion Ajax in second place

AMSTERDAM — Ajax needed two late goals to beat Excelsior Rotterdam 2-0 Sunday to stay four points behind leader PSV Eindhoven heading into the Dutch league's winter break.

Substitute Mike Van der Hoorn put Ajax ahead in the 83rd and and Richairo Zivkovic made sure of the win five minutes later.

On Saturday, Memphis Depay scored twice for PSV in a 5-0 thrashing of Go Ahead Eagles in Eindhoven. PSV leads on 43 points ahead of Ajax, which has won the last four league titles.

On Wednesday, PSV beat third-place Feyenoord 4-3 in a makeup game, leaving the Rotterdam club 12 points off the lead.

Ajax was eliminated from the Dutch Cup with a 4-0 loss in Amsterdam to Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday.
