HAMMOND, Louisiana — A 5-month-old baby was found alive in a Hammond home where a man and woman were found dead from an apparent murder-suicide, Tangipahoa Parish authorities said.
Chief Deputy Dennis Pevey said deputies went to the home about 11:45 a.m. Monday to respond to a welfare concern call. When they arrived, Pevey said no one answered the door, but they heard a baby in the home. Deputies entered the home through an unlocked door and found the 5-month-old baby, he said.
After further searching the home, deputies said they found a man and woman, both dead of apparent gunshot wounds, in a rear bedroom. The victims were identified as Brandon Colona, 26, and Theresa Doby, 21, who lived in the home.
Pevey said evidence recovered at the scene shows Colona shot and killed Doby, his girlfriend, with a .40 caliber handgun before turning the weapon on himself.
"The motive behind this tragic scene is unclear at this time," he said. "The child located earlier is safe and in good health remaining with family members."
The sheriff's office contacted the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab to process the scene for evidence. That agency and the parish coroner's office have since cleared the scene, Pevey said.
