Man in Pa. mental hospital since 1978 slayings of wife, unborn child ordered recommitted

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — A southeastern Pennsylvania man who has been in the state mental hospital since the slayings of his wife and unborn son more than three decades ago has been ordered recommitted for another year.

The Daily Local News of West Chester (http://bit.ly/IHLXH9 ) says Common Pleas Judge Edward Griffith said Wednesday that 61-year-old Richard Greist might harm himself or others if not returned to Norristown State Hospital.

Common Pleas Judge Edward Griffith said Wednesday that 61-year-old Richard Greist might harm himself or others if not returned to Norristown State Hospital.

Authorities said Greist slashed his 8-months-pregnant wife, mutilated the fetus, and also attacked his 6-year-old daughter and grandmother in East Coventry Township in May 1978. He said he believed they were possessed by the devil. Greist was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Griffith cited Greist's refusal to attend his review hearing this year as evidence of "manipulative behavior" and "irrational thought processes."
