WASHINGTON — Former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and husband Mark Kelly are trying to enlist veterans in their effort to bring about changes in gun laws, most notably to expand the use of background checks.
Kelly joined Friday with a handful of former military leaders to announce the formation of Veterans for Responsible Solutions. It will operate as a sister group to Americans for Responsible Solutions, a super PAC that, according to the Sunlight Foundation, spent $170,410 to help Democrat Terry McAuliffe win election in Virginia's gubernatorial race.
Kelly says veterans provide a unique voice to the gun debate because they know how to use firearms responsibly. He says he envisions that one of the group's missions will be to lobby federal and state lawmakers on an array of legislation.
