Connecticut native takes command of Groton-based submarine

GROTON, Connecticut — A Connecticut native has taken command of a Groton-based attack submarine.

Navy Cmdr. Daniel Lombardo assumed command of USS Springfield at a ceremony Friday.

Lombardo graduated from Danbury High School in 1993 before attending the U.S. Naval Academy. He has been serving in Washington on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He replaces Cmdr. Christian Williams, who assumed command in January 2012 and led Springfield on a six-month deployment last year.

Springfield is a Los Angeles-class attack submarine that was commissioned in 1993. It is named for cities in Illinois and Massachusetts.
