CHENANGO, New York — State police are investigating a head-on crash along New York's Southern Tier that killed two women from Binghamton.

Troopers say the accident occurred on state Route 12 in the Broome County Town of Chenango early Monday afternoon.

Authorities say a Toyota Camry driven by 78-year-old Laura Palmatier was traveling south on the two-lane highway and attempted to pass a vehicle in a passing zone. She then veered into the northbound lanes and struck a 1996 Buick driven by 81-year-old Dolores Hankins.

Palmatier was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where she died. Hankins was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

A state police investigation is still in progress.
