Judge denies new trial for man convicted of killing his police officer father in Greeneville

ROGERSVILLE, Tennessee — A judge has denied a new trial for a Tennessee man convicted of murder in the death of his police officer father.

Special prosecutor Tony Clark told The Greeneville Sun ( that special Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood did not give his reasons for denying the motion from defense attorneys for 22-year-old Ethan Self, who fatally shot his father, Greenville police Sgt. Roger Self, in the head.

Defense lawyer John T. Milburn Rogers, who made several arguments why a new trial should be allowed, said he was disappointed in the ruling and would appeal it.

Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty for Ethan Self. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. Clark said Self would be eligible for parole after serving 51 years.
