Liberty Bell replica goes on display in Rapid City at new tourist attraction

RAPID CITY, South Dakota — A full-size Liberty Bell replica goes on display this week in Rapid City and will be rung hourly in celebration of the Fourth of July.

Visitors to the Founding Fathers Black Hill tourist attraction can also hear a free dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by a Revolutionary War-era re-enactor. That will be held every hour on Friday, followed by a ceremonial ringing of the bell.

The new bronze bell weighs 2,300 pounds and is made of 80 percent copper and 20 percent tin. Unlike the original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the replica features a "false crack" that allows it to still produce a high-quality ringing tone.

The attraction is 6 miles south of Rapid City on the road to Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
