Ex-Coast Guard officer sentenced to 7 years in freight shipment kickback scheme

NORFOLK, Virginia — A former Coast Guard transportation officer will spend more than seven years in prison for wire fraud and taking bribes.

A federal judge in Norfolk sentenced Nathan Allen Dunn of Brookwood, Alabama, Wednesday to seven years and three months in prison. He also must pay nearly $780,000 in restitution to the federal government.

Dunn pleaded guilty to the charges in January.

Dunn was a transportation officer from October 2009 to November 2011 at the Surface Forces Logistics Center in Norfolk, where he was in charge of coordinating the shipment of large freight between Coast Guard bases. Prosecutors say Dunn conspired to award overpriced or fake shipment contracts to 12 companies owned by another man in exchange for bribery payments.

That man, Huffman Monk, already received a five-year sentence.
