BAKERSVILLE, North Carolina — A man has been charged with two counts of murder following the disappearance of two women in western North Carolina.
Mitchell County authorities tell local media outlets that 41-year-old Cecil Byrd was charged Thursday in the death of 45-year-old Sarah Denise Riddle, who was reported missing from McDowell County last week.
Byrd had been arrested Wednesday on an outstanding warrant after the authorized use of the woman's debit card.
After he was stopped, Byrd was also charged with first-degree murder in the death of 49-year-old Lisa Ann Robbins who disappeared from her home near Bakersville on Oct. 23. Earlier Wednesday authorities found what are thought to be human remains near the North Carolina-Tennessee border. Officials didn't immediately confirm whose remains were found.
It isn't clear if Byrd has an attorney.
