WATSONVILLE, California — Police in Northern California say an officer was shot in the stomach by a suspect he and another four officers were chasing.

Watsonville police Lt. Saul Gonzalez tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1AZam8S ) the officer is in stable condition.

Gonzalez says the man who shot him Saturday evening was killed when police returned fire.

He says the unnamed suspect was known to police because of past encounters.

Gonzalez says the man was approached near his home by the officers before he fled on foot.

He says the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified pending notification of relatives.
