Genesee County judge orders new impaired driving trial for Flint City Councilman Eric Mays

FLINT, Michigan — A Flint city councilman will get a new trial in an impaired driving case.

The Flint Journal reports ( ) Friday that a Genesee County Circuit Judge Joseph Farah reversed Eric Mays' conviction in an opinion issued Thursday.

Farah wrote that the trial court did not do enough to confirm that Mays wanted to represent himself at trial. Farah also said Mays was not adequately advised of the risks in representing himself.

Mays' responded Friday to news of the new trial by telling a reporter: "Hallelujah and the greatest praise to God."

Police say they found him in 2013 outside a disabled vehicle that was facing the wrong direction on Interstate 475.

A jury found Mays not guilty of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, marijuana possession and refusing to be fingerprinted.
