RENO, Nevada — Nevada's unseasonably warm weather is expected to give way to high winds and rain as a winter storm makes its way into the Sierra.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory for much of the Sierra where winds are forecast to gust up to 55 mph Thursday and could top 100 mph over the mountaintops Friday.

Up to three of inches of rain is possible around Lake Tahoe, with some of it reaching valley floors in Reno and Carson City.

Meteorologist Mark Deutschendorf told the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://tinyurl.com/njp2mm5) it's part of an atmospheric river of moisture called the "Pineapple Express." A similar pattern dumped 4.5 inches of rain and snow at Lake Tahoe this same time last year.

Reno's high is expected to approach 70 degrees Thursday.
