NY Amish boy, 6, hit by SUV, killed while chasing lost hat; driver not charged

RICHLAND, New York — A 6-year-old Amish boy has died after being hit by a car in central New York.

State Police say Jonathan Swartzentruber's hat was blown off by a wind gust and he chased it onto a road in the Oswego County town of Richland, where he was hit by an SUV at about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Troopers say the driver swerved in an unsuccessful effort to avoid the child, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.

There are no charges pending against the driver.

Richland is 36 miles north of Syracuse.
