Va. woman gets 18 months in prison after buying 31 guns without a license; planned to resell

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — A Manassas woman has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for violating federal firearms laws after buying and selling 31 handguns over a two-week span without a license.

The sentence imposed Friday on 44-year-old Kimberly Dinkins was in line with that sought by federal prosecutors in Alexandria. The defense sought a sentence of 1 year.

Prosecutors said some of the guns ended up in the hands of juveniles and drug dealers. Nineteen guns have not been recovered.

Dinkins' lawyer said she was desperate to make money after losing her job and ended up losing money on the guns.

Federal law does not require registration as a firearms dealer for occasional private sales. But it does require a license if a person deals in firearms as a moneymaking enterprise.
