Avon couple deny child abuse charges stemming from infant daughter's death

VAIL, Colorado — An Avon couple charged in the death of their infant daughter have pleaded not guilty to child abuse resulting in death.

The Vail Daily reports ( ) Lossie Thomas and Patrick Williams will be tried separately in the June 9 death of 6-month-old Paris Belle Williams. Thomas' trial is scheduled to begin May 31, and Williams' is set for June 20.

Dr. Robert A. Kurtzman says the baby died from pneumonia and was underweight, dehydrated, suffered from staph and E. coli infections and had sores on her body.

Defense attorneys have said Williams and Thomas are overwhelmed, working parents with two other children. They say no pattern of conduct indicated the kind of criminal neglect that would lead to the baby's death.
