Las Cruces man accused of child abuse; Allegedly kept diaper-clad 2-year-old outside in cold

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — A Las Cruces man is accused of child abuse for allegedly keeping his 2-year-old daughter outside in 28-degree weather with only a diaper on.

Dona Ana Sheriff's officials say 35-year-old Efrain Mejia is being held on a $1,000 bond on suspicion of battery against a household member and abuse of a child.

He was jailed early Saturday after a woman called 911 to report her neighbors having an argument.

Sheriff's investigators say Mejia was arguing with his girlfriend and tried to leave their house with the couple's toddler.

Mejia reportedly hid in the desert for about an hour before he entered a neighbor's house through an unlocked door.

Sheriff's deputies later located Mejia inside the home and arrested him.

It was unclear Monday if Mejia has a lawyer yet.
