WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Officials say a Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy shot a man during a traffic stop.

The shooting happened early Friday in West Palm Beach after the deputy tried to stop a vehicle. The driver took off at a high rate and the deputy followed him.

Authorities say the vehicle stopped and the passenger door opened, which led the deputy to believe the occupants were going to bail out. The deputy got out to investigate. The vehicle then took off, swerving toward the deputy. The deputy shot his firearm multiple times, hitting the driver. The man fled across the street but was captured a short time later.

The passengers stayed in the car and cooperated with deputies.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and is expect to survive.
