Sentencing delayed for Florida imam convicted of supporting Pakistani Taliban terror group

MIAMI — Sentencing has been delayed for a Muslim cleric convicted in South Florida of supporting the Pakistani Taliban terror organization.

A federal judge on Friday granted the request for delay by attorneys for 78-year-old Hafiz Khan. The sentencing hearing originally scheduled for later this month has been pushed back to July 19.

Khan faces a maximum of 60 years behind bars. His lawyers say they need more time to prepare. Prosecutors did not oppose the request.

Khan was convicted in March of terrorism support charges involving the funneling of thousands of dollars to the Pakistani Taliban. Similar charges against Khan's two sons were dismissed.

Khan also seeks a new trial, claiming in part that an FBI informant's interview with The Associated Press revealed new evidence. No ruling yet on that motion.
