Upstate NY high school changing its nickname from Redskins getting $10K from Oneida Indians

COOPERSTOWN, New York — An upstate New York high school changing its sports nickname from Redskins to Hawkeyes is getting help from the Oneida Indians to buy new jerseys.

Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter will present a check for $10,000 to the Cooperstown Central School District on Wednesday night.

The school board in the village of Cooperstown voted for the change last month after students complained that the longtime Redskins nickname was offensive. Hawkeye is the nickname of a character created by author James Fenimore Cooper, who lived in Cooperstown.

Cooperstown is best known as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. But it also was the hometown of Cooper, who wrote "The Last of the Mohicans."
