Prosecutor: Police shoot, kill elderly Old Bridge man who was armed with knife

OLD BRIDGE, New Jersey — An elderly New Jersey man who allegedly was armed with a knife was shot and killed during a confrontation with police as they tried to quell a domestic disturbance.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey says Old Bridge police were called to the Cedar Grove Place home shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Carey says 75-year-old Talbot Schroeder of Old Bridge appeared distraught and allegedly had attacked a family member and threatened another relative. He also had injured himself with a knife.

The officers tried to calm Schroeder and repeatedly told him to drop the knife, but he refused and one of the officers eventually fired one shot. Schroeder was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 6:30 a.m.

The name of the officer who fired the shot has not been disclosed.
