Authorities identify 82-year-old man who died after escaping western Pennsylvania house fire

HILLSVILLE, Pennsylvania — Authorities have identified an 82-year-old man who died after escaping a fire at his rural western Pennsylvania home.

State police say Robert Leroy Knepp, of Edinburg, died after escaping the fire reported about 12:30 a.m. Monday in Mahoning Township. That's in Lawrence County, near the Ohio border, some 50 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Officials say they received an emergency call from someone in the home before a passerby also called to report flames shooting through the roof.

Knepp was rescued from the home, but collapsed in the yard where a firefighter performed CPR. He died a short time later at a nearby hospital.

The cause of his death and the reason for the fire were still being investigated.

Two other people who lived in the home escaped unharmed.
