OREGON CITY, Oregon — A man accused of fatally slashing a Lake Oswego, Oregon, man has told a judge he wants to go to trial as quickly as possible.
Doctors at the Oregon State Hospital say 38-year-old Erik John Meiser is fit to stand trial, now scheduled for June 2014.
The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/13PsO2v) that at a hearing Monday, Meiser told Judge Eve Miller in Clackamas County that 14 months isn't a speedy trial.
But Miller told Meiser his attorneys need the time to prepare a defense.
Meiser is charged with aggravated murder in the killing of 57-year-old Frederick Hayes during a burglary in September. He could face the death penalty.
The judge has scheduled a hearing next month to rule on whether Meiser is mentally competent.
