BURLINGTON, Iowa — A 43-year-old Fort Madison man who made a plea deal has been given 10 years in prison for killing another man in Burlington.

The Hawk Eye reports (http://bit.ly/1CbDwB3 ) that Lenard "Ray" Polhans was sentenced on Monday. Prosecutors lowered the original charge of first-degree murder in exchange for Polhans' guilty pleas to charges of voluntary manslaughter and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was convicted in the June 1 shooting death of 35-year-old Marvin "Whitey" Sutton.

Polhans has said he acted in self-defense after Sutton used a hammer to strike him in the back during an argument. In court on Monday, Polhans apologized to Sutton's mother and said he wished he could go back in time to change everything that happened that day.
