Cops: Man shot twice by Rochester police officer refused to drop knife; suspect hospitalized

ROCHESTER, New York — Authorities say a 23-year-old Rochester man remains hospitalized after being shot twice by a police officer when he refused orders to drop the knife he was holding while moving toward the officer.

Rochester police officials say Officer Cynthia Muratore responded Monday morning to a report of a family dispute at an apartment complex. When she arrived she found a woman and her son in the parking lot.

Officials say Muratore put them in her patrol car when Anthony Plaza came outside holding a large steak knife. Police say the officer shot Plaza when he refused her repeated orders to drop her knife.

Officials say he was shot a second time when he started to get up while still holding the knife.

Plaza is listed din guarded condition at a Rochester hospital.

He hasn't been charged.
