KENNESAW, Georgia — Firefighters say residents of a metro Atlanta apartment complex escaped an early morning fire that damaged 20 units.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1yeCA8F ) the blaze was reported just before 2 a.m. Friday at the Heights of Kennsaw apartment complex. Cobb County fire department spokeswoman Denell Boyd says gusty winds caused the fire to spread and callers reported seeing heavy flames rising from the roof.

Boyd says all residents evacuated safely and firefighters managed to bring the flames under control by about 3:30 a.m. She says eight apartments were heavily damaged by the fire, while 12 others had smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire had not been determined late Friday morning.
