NY motorcyclist dies after he rear-ends street sweeper and bike catches fire


COLONIE, New York — A motorcycle driver is dead after he rear-ended a street sweeper and his bike caught fire in the Albany area.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. Saturday on Route 9 in Colonie.

Police say Gary Charbonneau rear-ended a vehicle that was cleaning the roadway in front of the Colonie landfill.

The motorcycle caught fire and the 46-year-old Ballston Lake man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the street sweeper was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Route 9 was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the accident.
