NORFOLK, Virginia — The USS Leyte Gulf is returning to its homeport in Virginia.

The guided-missile cruiser is scheduled to return to Naval Station Norfolk on Wednesday.

The homecoming follows a six-month deployment to the Navy's Sixth Fleet area of responsibility. That area includes the waters around Europe and parts of Africa.

While deployed, the Navy says the ship and a helicopter anti-submarine squadron conducted maritime security operations.
