CHEYENNE, Wyoming — The Wyoming Department of Corrections says a 24-year-old inmate at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins has died.

The agency says Alex Richard Ascherin died Friday from an apparent suicide. The death is being investigated by the department as well as the Carbon County Sheriff's Office and Carbon County Coroner.

Ascherin was sentenced last Nov. 19 by Sheridan County District Court Judge John G. Fenn to three to five years in prison on a conviction for strangulation of a household member. He also was serving a concurrent three to five year sentence out of Natrona County for possession of a controlled substance.
