Peoria officer criticized for Facebook photo of Obama wins praise for helping save deputy

PHOENIX — More than a year after facing criticism for posting a photo of an apparent bullet-riddled T-shirt with a likeness of President Barack Obama on Facebook, a Peoria police officer is winning praise from his superiors.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/131Wsio ) reports officer Pat Shearer helped save the life of a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy who had been shot by someone he pulled over.

Peoria police officials say Shearer took over caring for the deputy as a fellow officer secured the scene on Jan. 8.

Deputy Ruben Garcia called Shearer and the other officer's actions, "brave and heroic."

Shearer was demoted to officer and suspended without pay after he briefly posted the photo days before the president's visit to Chandler.
