Charlotte streetcar project recommended for $75 million federal grant

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — President Obama's budget proposal includes a $75 million grant to expand Charlotte's streetcar project.

Multiple media outlets reported the grant would help add another 2.5 miles to the current 1.5-mile streetcar line in Charlotte.

The city would have to match the grant on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Supporters say the streetcar would help the economy in Charlotte's west side.

Mayor Pro Tem Michael Barnes says he's concerned about the costs of the project.

Congress would have to go along with the president for the city to get the federal grant.

Charlotte officials hope to complete the project in 2019.
