SAN RAFAEL, California — Authorities say a pilot walked away from a small plane crash near the San Rafael Airport.

Jeff Rowan, a battalion chief at the San Rafael Fire Department, says the plane flipped upside-down Saturday afternoon after a failed takeoff from the airport runway.

Rowan told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1wXZz9E ) the pilot suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment.

The Thorp T-18, which Rowan described as a small experimental plane, had major damage.
