NEW YORK — Police say a 25-year-old man was shot and critically wounded by an NYPD officer after he pointed his own gun at police in a housing project stairwell.
The incident happened early Saturday in a building on Beach Channel Drive in the Rockaways.
Four uniformed officers entered the building's lobby and heard screaming coming from a stairwell.

Police say the officers entered the stairwell and saw an armed man.
They ordered the man to drop his weapon. Police say that instead the man ran un the stairs, then pointed his gun at the officers.
One officer fired and hit the man in the torso.
The man was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition. His name was not immediately released.
A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
