Egyptian official: Gunmen kill 2 senior officers in Egypt's troubled Sinai Peninsula

EL-ARISH, Egypt — An Egyptian security official says gunmen killed two senior officers in the volatile northern Sinai Peninsula.

The official says the attackers opened fire on the officers' vehicle near the city of el-Arish on Friday, sprayed it with bullets and fled the scene. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media.

The attack comes two days after the military said it killed three militants in Sinai, including the brother of the alleged leader of an al-Qaida-inspired group called Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

The group claimed in a statement that its three members died in an alleged Israeli drone strike after they launched several rockets against Israel.

The military, which has for months waged an offensive against militants in Sinai, denied there was a strike.
