SCHENECTADY, New York — A Schenectady woman convicted in the beating death of her 8-year-old grandson has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
Gloria Nelligan was convicted last month of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in the death of Sha'hiim Nelligan. Authorities say the boy was beaten repeatedly over 12 hours.
The Times-Union of Albany reports (http://bit.ly/1d3A5N7 ) that at the sentencing Friday, the 43-year-old defendant's lawyer read a letter from her saying she maintained her household under "God's law."
Prosecutors argued that Nelligan made the boy do pushups, beat him and tied him to a chair after he stole a pack of gum from a store. They say she then waited too long to seek medical attention for the child.
Gloria Nelligan's lawyer has said the boy's punishment was discipline.
