STERLING, New York — Police say a 42-year-old man drowned in Lake Ontario after helping a child who was struggling in the water.

The Cayuga County sheriff's office tells local media that Adam McKelvey of Oswego was swimming Saturday afternoon near the shore in Sterling with family and friends when a child began struggling in the water.

Deputies say McKelvey and other swimmers helped rescue the child. But at some point, McKelvey became fatigued and slipped below the lake's surface.

McKelvey was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
