Grand Rapids Public Schools to send layoff notices to about 90 amid enrollment decline

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — The Grand Rapids Public Schools district is sending layoff notices to about 90 staffers as it projects losing another 400 students this fall.

The Grand Rapids Press reports ( ) school board members on Monday approved sending the notices to about 40 teachers and other staffers, including paraprofessionals and student advocates. Other employees are affected.

Micky Savage, the district's director of human resources and labor relations, says the district hopes to get more students enrolled to bring some of the employees back.

The district is facing a $13.5 million operating deficit in its more than $200 million 2014-15 budget.

The planned layoffs aren't nearly as drastic as last summer, when the board sent notices to 216 staffers as it faced a projected enrollment decline of 700 students last school year.
