CHARLESTON, South Carolina — The Carnival Cruise Lines vessel Fantasy, which has been based in South Carolina for almost six years, is sailing off this weekend and being replaced by another vessel.

The Fantasy arrives in Charleston on Saturday morning and passengers disembark. But later in the day, outgoing passengers will board the Carnival Ecstasy which will now be based in the city.

The Fantasy begins operating out of Miami later this year.

It's been nearly six years since the Fantasy was based in Charleston, giving the city a year-round cruise industry. Before that ships made port calls but none were based in the city.

In recent years there's been an ongoing debate and legal fight over South Carolina Ports Authority plans to build a new passenger cruise terminal.
