TUCSON, Arizona — Arizona Game and Fish Department officials say a collared bighorn sheep has fallen to its death in the Catalina Mountains near Tucson.
Officials say the department received an alert from a sheep's collar last Saturday indicating the 8-year-old ewe had died.
The ewe apparently fell from a small cliff on Pontatoc Ridge on July 24.
Bighorns transplanted to the mountains in 2013 and 2014 were outfitted with GPS tracking collars.
Game and Fish officials will conduct a necropsy to figure out if the ewe was having any health issues.
It's the first bighorn death in the Catalina Mountains since last December.
There are 39 collared bighorns alive in the Catalinas, plus a number of lambs born to those sheep.
