CRESTWOOD, Illinois — A former suburban Chicago water official convicted in a scheme to secretly mix contaminated well water into public drinking supplies has resigned as police chief of Crestwood.
Theresa Neubauer had been on paid leave as police chief since her indictment on federal charges in the tainted water case in April 2011. The former water department supervisor was convicted Monday of making false statements to environmental regulators. Her tentative sentencing date is Oct. 2.
The SouthtownStar reports (http://bit.ly/134Jtfc ) that she submitted her resignation as chief of police on Thursday in a letter in which she said she "faithfully served" the village. Her resignation was approved during a village board meeting Thursday night.
Prosecutors said the village had been mixing the tainted well water with cleaner but pricier water from Lake Michigan.
