TOPEKA, Kansas — House Speaker Ray Merrick is appointing Topeka attorney Jake Fisher as his legislative director.

Merrick announced Wednesday that Fisher will replace B.J. Harden, who is now working for the state treasurer.

Fisher's private practice focused on criminal and family law as well as estate planning. Merrick said in a press release that his legal experience will be a valuable asset to the House Republican caucus.

Merrick is a Stilwell Republican who has served as House Speaker since 2013. Fisher ran unsuccessfully for a Topeka area seat in the Kansas House in 2012.
