Washington County man who lived alone killed in house fire

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee — A Washington County man has died in a house fire.

Capt. Shawn Judy of the Washington County Sheriff's Office tells the Johnson City Press ( that firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a house with smoke coming from it near Gray's Daniel Boone High School. Judy later confirmed that the resident had died.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office identified the victim on Tuesday as 64-year-old Paul Cox.

A neighbor says he saw smoke billowing from a side window of the house. He says he kicked in the door, but was unable to enter to search for the man who lived there due to heavy smoke.

Firefighters located Cox in the living room and removed him, but he was already dead.
