Police say man 22, bludgeoned grandmother with hammer while she slept; he says she abused him

WILTON, Maine — A 22-year-old man charged with killing his grandmother over the weekend told police he bludgeoned her with a hammer while she slept in their home in Wilton.

Dana Craney told investigators he attacked 67-year-old Joanne Goudreau in her bed and then dragged her body outside, where he covered her with plywood and trash bags Saturday, according to an affidavit by a state police detective.

A judge on Monday ordered him held pending a bail hearing Jan. 30.

The Sun Journal reported that Craney is the son of convicted murderer — his father was one of two men convicted of killing a used furniture dealer and auctioneer in December 1990 in Auburn.

The younger Craney, who was only 5 months old when his father was arrested, lived with his grandmother. He told police that she had abused him and that he "needed to end it."

An autopsy determined that Goudreau died from head injuries.

Neighbors told police Goudreau had earlier reported that her grandson had hit her. One neighbor said that Goudreau had been bloodied after a fight with her grandson and that she needed to find another place to stay; another neighbor said her grandson boasted he could kill her "and get rid of the body and get away with it."
