GULFPORT, Mississippi — Harrison County has received a $70,000 state grant for a household hazardous waste collection event.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said Monday the grant will help Harrison County's efforts in improving the management of solid waste.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1uSGWAF ) the event will occur in the spring, but a date has not been set.

Similar grants from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality are used by cities and counties across the state to prevent and clean up unauthorized dumps, hire local solid waste enforcement officers, educate the public and establish programs to collect waste.
