LABADIEVILLE, Louisiana — State police say a 21-year-old Napoleonville man lost control of his vehicle during a high-speed chase with sheriff's deputies, crashed and later died at a hospital.

Trooper Evan Harrell says Assumption Parish sheriff's deputies had tried to pull over Darrell Thomas shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday for speeding along Louisiana Highway 308.

Harrell said Thomas refused to pull-over, prompting a chase that exceeded 100 mph at times.

Harrell says Thomas was driving back onto Highway 308, but failed to handle a left-hand turn.

He says the car went off the road, hit a culvert, went airborne and then crashed into a utility pole.

Harrell says Thomas, who was not wearing his seat belt, was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
